Technology, Manuscripts and the Study of Texts
At Seforim Dan has posted on the new Lieberman Institute database of Talmud manuscripts. The Lieberman Institute represents one of the important attempts at using modern technological tools in the study of Hebrew manucripts and texts. There are a number of similar resources, most of which are different from one another and have different goals and strengths, the most popular being the Bar-Ilan Responsa Project. Another resource which we posted about before is the DVD of responsa from Hebrew Books and there is also Otzar HaHochma which offers either an external hard drive or an on-line subscription. In the comments on Dan’s post Shai has pointed us to a site which is attempted to do the same with the Videvdad, the sacred book of Zorastrian religion. A useful site which has much information about similar attempts at harnessing technology, often through the internet, for manuscript and similar studies is that of the Text Encoding Initiative. They have a list of current projects in the field. An example of the use of technology from another field of study is the Electronic Beowulf. For a list of projects in the field of Jewish textual study see the permanent links over at Manuscriptboy and Seforim. Shamma Friedman has written about some of these issues in his article found in Printing the Talmud which is the exhibition catalogue from the “From Bomberg to Schottenstein” exhibition which was held at the YU Museum last year.
