Yom Kippur in the NY Times 105 years ago
Since the NY Times has now opened up its archives to the general public, it is worthwhile to take a few minutes to read this article about Yom Kippur from 1905. It contains some interesting descriptions of kapparot and candle lighting (apropos this post at Seforim).

That’s SO strange. I understand that the author could have confused the day preceding the fast (when kapporès are actually performed) and the night following it, but what’s the origin of the huge-candles-in-shul thing, with the dialogue between the Chief Rabbi and the Gebote? Clearly, it seems to be reflecting some kind of practice, though not one familiar to me. The closest thing of which I can think is the menora-lighting at KAJ-Breuer’s, which uses huge tapers.
