A detailed account of the acquisition of the Chabad Library collection is given in the Hebrew book Sifryas Lubavitch (Kehot Publication Society). In response to "Maria", Barry Gurary surreptitiously removed rare books from the library, and was in the process of selling them. He claimed in court that the books belonged to him as an inheritance, while Chabad maintained that they were community property as intended by the Chabad Rebbes who assembled the collection. The courts ruled in favor of Chabad. Transcripts of the court proceedings are part of the public record. Any insinuation that the collection was assembled in a non-transparent or unethical way is vile, empty slander.

from the court cases and battles of Shneerson and Barry Gur Ari [against his own uncle- naming him " A Fuehrer"] you can imagine it was most probably not all collected in the most transparent and ethical of ways

I was actually wondering about how interesting it is that Habad has such a great library. At least today they do not project themselves as a group which would want such an impressive library with many critical and rare works. Given the variety of the material in the library, it would be interesting to examine how each volume was acquired and by whom.

the guy behind hebrewbooks is a chabadnik. he does a great job; my only complaint is that he messes with the imprint information on the title page.

btw, the habad library is one of the best judaica libraries in america. when i was working on early american hebrew printing i found many rarities, including unica
