Tattooed Jews and Nuclear Weapons

skitched-20080717-092814.jpg

In today’s NYT there is an article about Jews and their tattoos. I have written here about this subject before. Thankfully, they debunked the myth that a Jew with a tattoo can’t be buried in a Jewish cemetery.

There was another article in this morning’s paper which had an interesting angle to it. This article was about the benefits of dieting. I am not going to talk about the dieting aspect, but if you are interested in my opinion, see this website. In order to have a controlled environment, the participants in the study were housed and fed at a secluded facility where their eating could be monitored. Where was such a facility located?

The trial was conducted at the Nuclear Research Center in Dimona, Israel, an isolated workplace that has its own medical department.

In addition to regular meetings and telephone calls with dietitians for the participants, the plan included nutrition counseling for spouses and a revamping of the food served in the center’s cafeteria.

Because the center is in an isolated area, the dieters consistently ate lunch, the largest meal of the day, in the company cafeteria, where food was color-coded to help dieters comply with their eating plan.

Who needs Mordechai Vanunu when you have a bunch of people trying to lose weight.

I just snooped around on the McDougall web site…At one point he claims, ” All of the great feats in history have been accomplished by men following near-vegetarian diets from infancy.” Sounds a bit over the top to me!

I guess that according to him not many “great feats” have happened in the modern period. All in all, I do think that he is right, even if Shabbat and the occasional BBQ are my McDougall vacation days.
