How to Cut Down on Book Hoarding

Lifehacker discusses the task whose name shall not be mentioned.

If you find yourself with more books than you have time to read, it may be time to cut down your collection. Here are a few strategies for crafting a more manageable library.

Menachem Butler recently blogged about an article that discusses Morton Smith. See more about the article here. I once spoke with a book dealer who helped appraise Smith’s book collection, which along with his papers is now at JTS. The dealer said that Smith had books in every conceivable nook and cranny of his house. Apparently Smith didn’t really have much in the way of kitchenware, so what was he to do with empty cabinets except to fill them with books.

when we moved into our apt. we bought a washer and dryer from the previous tenant. they broke shortly thereafter, but we didn’t get rid of them because i told my wife i would learn appliance repair and fix them. a year later she discovered that the real reason i had not thrown them out is because if used them as storage for photocopies of journal articles i had hoarded. she almost flipped out and needless to say i had the washer and dryer on the curb that night. i’m lucky she let me keep all the journal articles. since then i’ve taken over closets, kitchen chairs, etc. with stacks of books. my name is ari and i’m a hoarder.
