Another Epigraphical Rabbi

It seems that another burial cave of a rabbi was discovered in Tzippori. (hat tip) See here for a previous post on epigraphical rabbis. Apparently this inscription is in Aramaic and says “This is the burial[place-MM] of Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi ha-Kappar.” That he inscription says “Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi ha-Kappar” leads some to think that it is not the Amora Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi. The inclusion of “ha-Kappar” is interesting because a lintel was discovered in the Golan Heights which said “This is the beit midrash of Rabbi Eliezer ha-Kappar.” Whether this is the Tanna Rabbi Eliezer ha-Kappar or Bar Kapparah, were they the same person, if not, what might have been the relationship between them, is not clear. Read this article by Vered Noam about the lintel and the identification of Rabbi Eliezer ha-Kappar.
