The Son of the Hafetz Hayyim with a Ph.D.

I happen to see the title page of an English and Yiddish translation of the Hafetz Hayyim’s book Nidhei Yisarel, not necessarily anything out of the ordinary. What I found interesting was that it was published by his son “Rabbi Aaron Kagan, Ph.D.” I know very little about the families of rabbis, but I found [...]

Torah in Motion Classes

Starting this week, Torah in Motion is offering a number of classes free-of-charge. This series has an excellent selection, ranging from Shai Secunda on “The Talmud and its World” to Dan Rabinowitz on “Forgeries and Censorship in Jewish Literature and Jewish Tradition.” These are just two of the very interesting classes in this series. For, ex hypothesi, a historical fact is what really took place, but where did anything take place? Each episode in a revolution or war resolves itself into a multitude of individual psychic movements. Each of these movements [...]

The influential French-Jewish anthropologist Claudé Levi-Strauss has died at the age of 100. Levi-Strauss influenced researchers in many fields and you can read here an introduction to his thought. See here and here for discussions of Levi-Strauss’s influence on biblical studies. Also see this article on his life and work from the Forward.

Some Trends in the Israeli Music Scene

For those who read Hebrew, there is a very good blog about religion, politics, and culture- לולאת האל. The blog has a recent post on Israeli music, specifically about music that could be described as Jewish music, whether because of the themes or lyrics. The post summarizes a number of recent articles that have been [...]
