Did You Hear About Yoav Sorek?
In Makor Rishon there is a very interesting interview with Yoav Sorek about Judaism, Jewish Law, Zionism, and Sorek’s experience of taking off his kippah in order to build an Israeli Judaism. The interview can be found here (scroll down a little bit) and is in Hebrew. Here are a number of Sorek’s writings. One of Sorek’s central claims is that religious Judaism in Israel is still living in exile and hasn’t internalized the reality of the Jewish State. This claim was presented in his article “Tora of Israel, Tora of Exile” which can be found in English here.
On a related note, read this post from Elder of Ziyon and check out this pre-army program. An article in English about this program can be found here.
Despite many rabbis who are sometimes corrupt, and more often than corrupt, just obtuse and close-minded, and a politicized religious establishment, exciting things aren’t happening in Israel when it comes to Jewish life in addition to Srugim. Speaking of which, who would identify with Sorek’s Judaism the most? Re’ut, Hodayah?

Sounds just like R. David bar Hayim of Machon Shilo.

Bar Hayyim just wants to Eretz Yisraelize, at least what he understands to be the true EI tradition, the halakhah. Sorek is speaking about a much larger change of thought, behavior, and world view which is very different qualitatively and in other ways from what Bar Hayyim is talking about.
