Some new books from the JNUL. 1. ירמיהו מלחי, רש”י: הפירוש לתלמוד, הוצאת מוסד הרב קוק 2. פירוש רבינו חננאל-מסכת בבא קמא, הוצאת מוסד הרב קוק Yermiyahu Malchi’s book focuses on Rashi’s commentary to Berachot, which was the subject of his dissertation. As for Rabbeinu Hananel’s commentary, is Mossad ha-Rav Kook producing a better product [...]

Happy 100th Birthday Rav Elyashiv

Apparently today is Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv’s 100th birthday, so a very happy birthday. (hat tip) I can’t say that I know much about Rav Elyashiv, but I did find this talk about him by Rami Reiner interesting.

Masoratiim and Datiloniim

A very important article has been published in the most recent issue of Modern Judaism. (hat tip) The article is by Asher Cohen and Bernard Susser and titled Reform Judaism in Israel: The Anatomy of Weakness. Cohen and Susser describe the discomfort described by a secular Israel in a Reform synagogue, This discomfiture touches on [...]

Pass the Kugel

Alan Brill writes about the latest stage in the discussion over James Kugel’s How to Read the Bible.

Day of Study at the Fifth Avenue Synagogue

This Sunday, March 14, there is a day of study to prepare for Passover at the Fifth Avenue Synagogue. Details can be found here. One of the talks looked particularly interesting. Rabbi Yigal Sklarin, Talmud & Jewish History Teacher, Ramaz: Using Italian Renaissance Art to Understand Halacha: The Laws of Mezuzah in Renaissance Italy

Martin Goodman’s Verdict-It’s Junk

Martin Goodman reviews Shlomo Sand’s The Invention of the Jewish People and it isn’t pretty. (hat tip) Why bother at all to review such a book? So far as I know, no scholar who works on Jewish history in the Roman period has deigned to pay it any attention. But such lordly disdain is dangerous. [...]

Rabbis Efraim Greenblatt and Hayyim David Halevy

In Aseih Lechah Rav, vol. 7, p. 174 Rabbi Hayyim David Halevy included a letter that he wrote to Rabbi Efraim Greenblatt, the author of Rivevot Efraim. In his letter, Rabbi Halevy defends himself against Rabbi Greenblatt’s complaint that he doesn’t seem to examine the literature of the Aharonim. Here are the comments of Rabbi [...]

He Must Be Doing Something Right-More Rabbah

Sometimes you can tell the correctness of someone’s actions by their critic’s statements. Here is a good one. (hat tip) Their principal objection is based on tznius, modesty, in the understanding of Rabbi Avi Shafran, Agudah’s director of public policy. … “Tznius isn’t a mode of dress. It includes the idea that women are demeaned [...]

Rabbah’s Retreat

See here for details about the retreat from Rabbah. My only comments are that the following song came to mind when I read the letters.

Where’s the Food?

These days whenever someone mentions Israeli TV shows, the first thing that comes to many people’s minds is Srugim. It is a very good show, and who can’t love a show in which Herem DeRabbeinu Gershom gets mentioned, as was in the last episode. I stumbled upon another show of a different nature, איפה האוכל?, [...]
