The Orthodox Envelope Gets Pushed a Little More
From the Jewish Week. (hat tip Failed Messiah)
In a move that apparently would make history for an Orthodox synagogue in the United States, the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale is scheduled Friday night to have a woman lead a Kabbalat Shabbat service where both men and women are expected to be in the pews.
Update: See this post at the Book of Doctrines and Opinions for a look back at the question of women leading Kabbalat Shabbat in modern Orthodoxy from twenty-three years ago.

I think the gospel choir he invited a few years ago was also a first.

I think Avi Weiss is just asking to be expelled from the RCA and to have HIR expelled from the OU. And, I regret to say, it would be justified.
I have a great deal of respect for him as a tremendous Ohev Yisrael, but what he’s done in the past year or so has made it extremely difficult for Modern Orthodox Jews. He has pushed his way into being the face for Mod Orthodoxy, which is tremendously unfair to those rabbis (such as my own) who have quietly, studiously, and Halachically, been leading a more progressive orthodoxy.
