Tisha B’av in Israel-5708/1948
The August 20, 1948 edition of Davar included the following pictures of how Tisha B’av was observed in a religious army unit. A short article described how the flag was raised and then lowered to half-mast in memory of the members of the unit who were killed in the battle of Gush Etzion, the Negev, and the battle around Ben Shemen. After this short ceremony the minḥa service was recited. The article emphasized how women were an important part of the unit.
