The National Library of Israel has made the Bibliography of the Hebrew Book 1470-1960 available online. Fantastic news.

From the National Library of Israel’s Facebook page:

The National Library of Israel is pleased to announce it has purchased the distribution rights to the Bibliography of the Hebrew Book 1470-1960 from CDI Systems, which distributed the database in recent years. The existing data is currently being converted to the Library system. Access will be free of charge as part of the catalogue systems of the Library. The new site will be launched by the end of June 2011.

There is a desire to make the Bibliography available to any user through the Internet, although the details are still being worked out.

The “history of the book” is a lively field of historical scholarship that looks at authorship, publication, and dissemination of texts of all kinds as windows onto culture and society in different periods and places. Book history also plumbs the relationships between writers, scribes, printers, and readers.

Join us as an international group of scholars examine the contours of Jewish identity through the captivating study of texts in Hebrew and other Jewish languages, and of the Jews and non-Jews who produced and consumed them.

Mercaz Zalman Shazar has published a collection of A.M. Haberman’s writings, edited by Avigdor Shinan. I haven’t been able to find any information about the contents of the book.

Bibliographers Looking for Work

According to this article in the Chronicle of Higher Education, (hat tip) bibliographers are not in such high-demand these days in institutions of higher education and academia. Lovers of the Hebrew manuscript and book should be grateful that frameworks such as the Institute of Microfilmed Hebrew Manuscripts and the Hebrew Palaeography Project exist. May their funding continue and increase.
