Pre-Shabbat Song: Arik Einstein

Yesterday Arik Einstein, possibly the most influential figure in the history of Israeli music, celebrated his 74th birthday. The Israeli music critic Yoav Kutner has written a post (Heb) about Einstein and his influence on Israeli music. Here are a few of his performances from numerous different time periods of his life.

Pre-Shabbat and Hanukkah Song

In 1970 Naomi Shemer wrote a song about the Israeli fortifications on the Bar-Lev Line that was influenced by the traditional Maoz Tzur. The name of the song is שבחי המעוז, the Praises of the Fortification, although it is also known as מעוז צור ישועתי after the opening line. For a detailed discussion of the […]

Pre-Shabbat Song-Mika Karny Sings the Song of Songs

Mika Karny is releasing a new album whose lyrics are based upon Shir ha-Shirim, the Song of Songs. An anonymous person who did not want to reveal his or her identity sent Karny the lyrics, and she put them to music. Below are two songs from the album. The following video is actually a recording […]

Pre-Shabbat Song-Karev Yom

One of my favorite Israeli radio programs is Sof Shavua Zugi that is broadcast on Galei Tzahal every Friday afternoon. The show features the husband and wife team of Yedidya Meir and Sivan Rahav Meir. They talk about current events, religion, culture, and just about anything else that is on their mind. The show is […]

Pre-Shabbat Song-Acollective

Often we here about this or that group of politicians and other VIP’s who are brought to Israel by this or that group. A slightly different approach is being taken by Kinetis. Kinetis is a grassroots organization established to promote the recognition of Israel at home and abroad as a vibrant and inspirational source of […]

Pre-Shabbat Song-Where Are All of Our Ancestors

One of the most important groups in the history of Israeli music is החלונות הגבוהים (“The High Windows“).  The group consisted of Arik Einstein, Shmulik Krauss, and Josie Katz.  Their one and only album, which was released in 1967, had a lasting affect on Israeli music. Since the traditional Torah reading cycle is finishing up […]

Pre-Shabbat Song-Mika Karni

It seems that as of late almost everyone, including the Hillary Clinton, has been talking about women in Israel. Whether it is women in the army, on advertisements, or the gym at the Technion. While there are definitely misogynistic Israelis and much that could be improved, I think that many people have an over simplified […]

Pre-Shabbat Song-Arik Einstein on Missing Israel

As the week of Abba/Daddy/Christmas-gate ends, I thought that this was an appropriate song to hear.

Pre-Shabbat Song-Srugim Meets the Besht

Here is the Niggun of the Besht that was in the last episode of Srugim, as performed by the young women of Ulpanat ha-Rav Baharan. (hat tip via FB) Here is a version with a faster tempo that has a very different feel than the clip below.
