Tel-Aviv University maintains a wonderful web site, Historical Jewish Press. This web site contains older issues of many Jewish and Hebrew newspapers. Here are a few examples of some fun things that I found:

-A review of Zuckermandel’s edition of the Tosefta (here)
-An interview with Hanock Albeck when his commentary on the Mishnah was published. (here)

-Also see here about when Albeck finished his commentary.
-An article about a legal battle of the authorship of the commentary to Seder Nezikin of Albeck’s commentary. (here)

-The announcement about Hanoch Albeck receiving the Israel Prize, which he refused to accept. I am not sure what Albeck found wrong with the Israel Prize, but apparently he opposed something about it. (here)

For the past three years, Marilyn Bess has operated MS Philly Organic, a small, low-traffic blog that features occasional posts about green living, out of her Manayunk home. Between her blog and infrequent contributions to ehow.com, over the last few years she says she’s made about $50. To Bess, her website is a hobby. To the city of Philadelphia, it’s a potential moneymaker, and the city wants its cut. In May, the city sent Bess a letter demanding that she pay $300, the price of a business privilege license.

This is close to, although not nearly as bad, as the little kids getting ticketed for selling lemonade without a license.

(hat tip)

2. Solomon Zucrow, Sifrut Ha-Halakhah. Zucrow also published a number of other books on rabbinic literature and Jewish law. All I know about him is that he taught at Boston Hebrew College in the early part of the 20th century. Any other information would be appreciated.

While doing an on-line search I came across an excellent bibliographic search engine from the National Center for Scientific Research in France. The database is from the Cat.instit and can be found here.

Cat.inist [is access to] about 15 million bibliographic records (back to 1973) of documents held in the INIST/CNRS collections and covering all fields of worldwide research in Science, Technology, Medicine, Humanities and Social Sciences.

What is very helpful about the database is that it not only shows the bibliographic details, but also an abstract of the article.

Update: I forgot to add that one of the good things about this bibliographical database is that it includes articles from Israeli journals written in Hebrew such as Tarbitz, Zion, and Cathedra, although how the journal titles are written isn’t consistent, e.g. Trbys=Tarbitz.
