Innovative Synagogues

Recently, the NY Post had an article titled Too Cool for Shul. A man in a crisp black suit stands outside the plate-glass doors on Crosby Street, checking off the names of the chosen on a clipboard. Young women with tousled hair and fashionable heels slip inside, followed by men in sharp suits or dark [...]

Who’s Going to Remember

Haaretz has an article about a change in the Yizkor prayer in Israel for fallen soldiers. The prayer at military memorial ceremonies for Israel’s fallen soldiers – Yizkor (Remember) – will open with the traditional “May God remember his sons and daughters,” Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz ruled this week. The statement followed [...]

A Time to Mourn and a Time to Dance

I have previously written about new liturgies for Yom ha-Atzmaut, and I wanted to add one to the list. Beit Tefila Israeli is an important part of the Jewish Renaissance in Israel. Here is their vision: Beit Tefilah Israeli aspires to establish an active Jewish community which speaks to the breadth of the secular public [...]

Mimcha Eilecha: Sefer ha-Shabbat

Yondov Kaplon has recently published Meimcha Eilecha: Sefer ha-Shabbat. (hat tip) The book is based upon the traditional liturgy for Shabbat, and it includes commentaries, both ancient and modern, stories, poetry, etc. This is similar to the popular mahazor that Kaplon edited for the Yamim Noraim.

Friday Afternoon Song-Malki mi-Kedem

The piyyut Malki mi-Kedem was written by Rabbi David Hassin, an 18th Moroccan rabbi and payytan. The piyyut was written for Shabbat Shirah and the seventh day of Pesaḥ when shirat ha-Yam was read. Here are a number of different versions of this piyyut. The words can be found here. Here is another piyyut by [...]

Friday Afternoon Song-Debbie Friedman z”l

Debbie Friedman, Devorah bat Freidal, has been hospitalized and is apparently in serious condition. This is probably the most appropriate of her songs to think of at the moment, and apologies for the shaky camera. Here is a good audio version. Update: Apparently Debbie Friedman z”l passed away earlier today. See these comments by Rabbi [...]

A Special Prayer for the Carmel Fire Tragedy

Here is a special prayer for the Carmel Fire victims.

Different Customs for Kol Nidre

Dov Bear has an interesting description of different customs from Kol Nidre. The comments are also worth a look. (hat tip) Also see this description by Elyashiv Reichner about how a community of both Sepharadim and Ashkenazim in Yerucham manages to have joint services for both Kol Nidre and Neilah.

The Prayers of Young Women

A few days ago a program was broadcast on Israeli TV that featured the final moments of prayer and supplication in the synagogue of the Neve Dekalim settlement in the Gaza Strip before the Israeli withdrawal.

Halakhah and Historical Reality

Tomer Persico has a posted (Hebrew) about another article by Yoav Sorek, this one was about Tisha B’av and how the historical reality of Israel behooves us to change the way the day is observed. I haven’t read Sorek’s article, but Persico posted his own response which was printed in Makor Rishon. Persico wrote that [...]
