I found it a bit ironic that Andrew Sullivan, a professional angster and screecher over Israel’s barbarism and lost soul, linked to an article from Harper’s about a Spanish investigation into CIA activities on its soil. What caught my eye in the article was the following sentence.

El-Masri’s CIA abductors entered Spanish territory using forged British passports, according to the prosecutors.

I did a quick search on Google News and found only a few article which discussed the recent Spanish investigation. Of these articles, only one mentioned the forged British passports. As far as I know, no American diplomats have been expelled from England, nor has the American ambassador been giving a scolding from the Foreign Office. Let’s not forget the words of the British Foreign Secretary about a similar case.

“Such misuse of British passports is intolerable,” Miliband said, adding that the fact that Israel was an ally of the United Kingdom “only adds insult to injury.”

As a wise man once sang,

The neighborhood bully just lives to survive
He’s criticized and condemned for being alive
He’s not supposed to fight back, he’s supposed to have thick skin
He’s supposed to lay down and die when his door is kicked in
He’s the neighborhood bully

Pointing out the hypocrisy of how Israel is treated is different than deciding whether or not the other passport-related affair was a smart move. See the recent comments by Avraham Shalom in this article about the capture of Adolf Eichmann.

Update: The BBC is reporting the Britons are taking fewing trips abroad. I am pretty sure it’s because they’re afraid someone will mistake them for some CIA extraordinary rendition team.

Update II: This angle of the story has been reported in the British press and the Foreign Office said that

We have just been made aware of the claim that British passports may have been misused. We have not yet seen the evidence for this claim. As soon as we do so, we will of course look into it. We attach great importance to the integrity of British passports.

Update III: Two Iranians were detained in Bahrain for trying to enter with fake British Passports.

These days whenever someone mentions Israeli TV shows, the first thing that comes to many people’s minds is Srugim. It is a very good show, and who can’t love a show in which Herem DeRabbeinu Gershom gets mentioned, as was in the last episode. I stumbled upon another show of a different nature, איפה האוכל?, “Where is the Food?” Each episode focuses on a different food, e.g. tomatoes, wheat, chickens, and follows the process from start to finish along with some cooking. It is similar in format to many of the cooking shows that are around these days. This is the first season of the show and the episodes can be found here. There have been some negative (and positive) reviews of the show, but I enjoyed the one on chickens.

The other day our family returned from a great vacation on Cape Cod, a very fitting way to end the summer. I am still getting organized with the start of the new school so blogging might be a bit erratic. We rented a house on a lake with friends so I got to do plenty of fishing and other water-related activities. In between I managed to finish Tom Segev’s One Palestine, Complete: Jews and Arabs Under the British Mandate. Despite a few times when I felt that Segev’s politics influenced his writing and analysis, I thought that it was a very good book which discussed a period in pre-state history which often doesn’t get that much attention. I have enjoyed reading a number of Segev’s books, and despite some valid criticism I would still recommend them.

Last week, David Pogue, whose column I highly recommend for anybody interested in technology, wrote a article criticizing some aspects of the cellphone industry in America. His bottom line, in my words, many people are getting ripped off. Today in his column he reports about some attempts to rebut his claims. Here is what Pogue had to say about the “bizarre” rebuttal letter from the CEO of Verizon,

I say “bizarre” because the Verizon Wireless rebuttal didn’t address a SINGLE ONE of the points I made! It’s as though I’d writtten, “Verizon Wireless is a terrible singer,” and his rebuttal was, “That’s absolutely not true! I speak three languages!”

Personally, since I hardly ever use a cell phone, I refuse to pay for a monthly plan and have a phone through Tracfone.

My Wednesday afternoon very quickly went from sunny to near-disaster. It was one of the rare days when I drive into Manhattan instead of taking the subway. When I went to my car to go home with a stop for some food shopping along the way, I realized that someone else was parked in the spot where my car had been. I looked around, thinking that maybe it was parked somewhere else. The first thought that came to my mind was “Who would want to steal our car?” Hoping that this wasn’t the case, I thought that maybe I was on the receiving end of Michael Bloomberg’s attempt to make up for lost municipal revenue by ticketing and/or towing every car possible. It seems like Washington D.C. has a similar approach to budget shortfalls. After a few phone calls it turned out that this was the case. After a few hours and a trip to the infamous tow pound on 38th St. and 12th Ave., I made it home. FYI: I think that I have a very good chance of beating the ticket ($110) and hopefully getting reimbursed for the towing fee ($185). As you can imagine, I wasn’t the happiest of people. Late Wednesday night while driving home from teaching a class I heard that a plot was foiled to blow up two synagogues in our neighborhood. For the latest see here. Very quickly I realized that no matter how bad my day had been, I should be thankful that my family and I and our community, not to mention the car, were all safe and sound.

Today’s NYT had a nice article about Riverdale, interviewing Rabbi Judith Lewis of the Riverdale Temple and David Winter who is the executive director of the Riverdale Jewish Center. The article ended with the following.

Rabbi Lewis’s response to the bomb plot was one of simple resolve: “My message is we go on with our mission.” On Thursday morning, for example, she woke early to take two candidates who are converting to Judaism to a ritual bath, called a mikvah. “The first thing I asked them was, ‘Are you sure you want to do this after what you saw last night — to tie your fate to a people frequently under this kind of threat?’ ” she said. “They said, ‘Even more so now.’ I cried.”

Her words echoed what is found in the Talmud on Eruvin 47a.

Our Rabbis taught: A (potential) convert who approaches to be converted at this time, they say to him: “Why have you decided to approach (us) to be converted? Do you not know that the Israelites at this time are pained, oppressed, harassed, and torn, and that afflictions come upon them?” If he says, “I know and am unworthy,” they accept him immediately.

Whether it is four terrorists or a NYC tow truck, I’m not going to let them prevent me from being thankful for what I have.

Unrelated to the Essenes and the Dead Sea Scrolls, the always interesting blog Boing Boing has linked to a blog which discusses things a bit more down-to-Earth, kids and how we shouldn’t be so paranoid, although sometimes we probably should be, about what they eat, how they play, etc. For parents with kids under driving age go check out Free Range Kids. Maybe parents should start worrying more about their kids being allowed to wander and experiment a bit than chickens. This reminds me of something that one of my brothers pointed out to me, Nature Deficit Disorder. Our son has just gotten involved with a new Boy Scout troop in our neighborhood which will give him plenty of outdoors time. See here about Jewish Scouting. Of all the things that he is hoping to do as a Boy Scout, I think that shooting a gun is high on his list.
