Mimcha Eilecha: Sefer ha-Shabbat

Yondov Kaplon has recently published Meimcha Eilecha: Sefer ha-Shabbat. (hat tip) The book is based upon the traditional liturgy for Shabbat, and it includes commentaries, both ancient and modern, stories, poetry, etc. This is similar to the popular mahazor that Kaplon edited for the Yamim Noraim.

Injured in the Line of Priestly Duty

I found this a few months ago in Makor Rishon and it was sitting on my desktop. For those who can’t read the Hebrew, a cohen was late to participate in the priestly blessing and a congregant slammed the door in his face and the cohen fell down the stairs and was injured. The two [...]

Judaism and the State

From Yaacov Lozowick: “The other day we had a fascinating public discussion at our synagogue. Prof. Danny Schwartz is doubtful of the direction the Rav Benny Lau is taking us in, of ever greater communal engagement and national expression. A shul, says Danny, is a shul, for religious services; all the other stuff should happen [...]

A Special Prayer for the Carmel Fire Tragedy

Here is a special prayer for the Carmel Fire victims.

Conference on the Ultra-Orthodox at the IDI

The Israel Democracy Institute recently held a conference on ultra-Orthodoxy in Israel. Makor Rishon had a long article on the conference, and I am posting this article. Please follow the numbers in order to read the article in the correct order.

Why the Silence on Rabbi Searches

Last week the Forward published an article on the legality of the way that most synagogues search for rabbis. While the writer was speaking about his experience on the search committee for a Conservative synagogue, it is clear that it is not movement specific. The inescapable conclusion is that the RA’s practices are illegal, and [...]

Different Customs for Kol Nidre

Dov Bear has an interesting description of different customs from Kol Nidre. The comments are also worth a look. (hat tip) Also see this description by Elyashiv Reichner about how a community of both Sepharadim and Ashkenazim in Yerucham manages to have joint services for both Kol Nidre and Neilah.

The Orthodox Envelope Gets Pushed a Little More

From the Jewish Week. (hat tip Failed Messiah) In a move that apparently would make history for an Orthodox synagogue in the United States, the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale is scheduled Friday night to have a woman lead a Kabbalat Shabbat service where both men and women are expected to be in the pews. Update: [...]

Yedid Nefesh

Giluy Milta B’alma has a post about the well-known piyyut, Yedid Nefesh (ignore the version of the piyyut included in this entry, see below), that is recited on Friday night in many synagogues. The post describes the textual history of the piyyut and why it is attributed to R. Elazar Azkari (1533-1600). Pay attention to [...]
