Most of these conclusions are correct, in my opinion, and probably privately also agreed to by a significant number of orthodox thinkers [though he was unwise to include #5.] The problem, of course, was and remains, that nobody has figured out a way to keep the baby while throwing out the bathwater. Thus, the orthodox rabbinate corect perceived the obvious already in the 1950s, that conservative judaism would descend into the farce it is today, identical with Reform. It was inexorable. This, of course, causes Orthodoxy to keep within it numerous anachronisms. (I refer to things like yom tov sheni or laws connected with avoda zara.) However, as a society model, if not necesarily on an individual level, it is better than the positionless position posited above.

DF,

Having heard first hand accounts of what happened in Beit Shemesh, I think that you are wrong on this issue. He was actually teaching at a yeshiva in Beit Shemesh and b/c of his political activity was fired at the behest of the mayor. If the mayor wouldn't have had him fired, he would probably still be teaching.

1. Now Mikveh ladies are degrading, at least to this lady. Tell me - is there anything, anything at all, that is not a feminist issue? The Torah says quite clearly, a man is worth 50 shekel, a woman is worth 30. There it is, folks. Along with a hundred other verses we can cite. In black and white. Judaism has faced down many "isms" that have come and gone thrououghout the millenia, and feminism is just one more.

2. "they said that most of the ultra-Orthodox opponents realized that their actions are responsible for Dov Lipman being elected to the Knesset, so they have decided to cut their losses on this battle." - Talk about projecting your own thoughts onto others! I asure you no Charedi has had any such thought. The only reason there were troubles beforehand was because Lipman was out there inciting them and provoking unrest. It was just a publicity stunt which he used (sucessfully) to become a politician. Now that Lipman is too busy agitating other people, he has no time to concentrate on harassing the charedim in beit shemesh.
