Fishman-Soloveitchik Debate Continues
Haym Soloveitchik reviewed Talia Fishman’s book Becoming the People of the Talmud: Oral Torah as Written Tradition in Medieval Jewish Cultures
in the Jewish Review of Books. Fishman’s response and Soloveitchik’s rejoinder can be found here. See a more detailed rejoinder by Soloveitchik here.
It ain’t pretty.

There’s also Part 1 of Fishman’s extended response.

I will have to reread the discussion, but I have the impression that Fishman and Soloveitchik are talking past each other.
Fishman does not have to be a Talmudist for the type of research and analysis that she is doing.

You can’t just wave your hand and make Soloveitchik disappear.

So Michael, what do you make of all of this? I’ve read everything posted between the two, and it strikes me that R. Soloveitchik’s critique is utterly devastating. Do you agree?

Adam,
I think that “utterly devastating” is a good description.
