Israel Antiquities Authority Archive

The Israel Antiquities Authority has begun to post online the archive from the period of the British Mandate. It is sure to be one of the most important resources for the study of life in Palestine during the British Mandate. Its focus is on material about archaeological excavations that were conducted during that period or issues relating to antiquities.

For those interested in such matters, the site will keep you occupied for hours on end. I did a quick search and came up with this memo about Rachel’s Tomb.

Now go do some archive digging. The archive can be found here.

Just a nit. To my understanding, technically, in August 1921 the British civil authority was not yet the “mandatory” government, since the Mandate was not established until 1922. By summer of 1920, the Military government in Palestine was replaced with a civil government. Some time in 1921 (apparently before this leter was written), the responsibility for Palestine was transferred from the Foreign Office to the Colonial Office (led by W. Churchill).
