Menachem Ben-Sasson

Menachem Ben-Sasson is well-known as one of the most important historians in the field of Geonic and medieval Jewish History, specifically in the area of North Africa. He has published numerous articles and books, including the authoritative book on the Jewish community of Qayrawan. Well, it turns out that I wasn’t aware that Ben-Sasson is now a member of the Knesset from the Kadima party. For a number of years his research has been severely curtailed while he was the rector of Hebrew University and I guess that being a member of the Knesset will not free up much time to do more research on the Jews of North Africa.

But he will be able to conduct considerable research on the Jews of modern North Africa, one of whom heads the Labor Party.

I saw his name in the list of Knesset members, but had not realized that it was him. What’s going to be with his and Robert Brody’s forthcoming edition of R’ Saadia’s Sefer HaShtarot?

If I am not mistaken Amnon Rubenstein continued to publish articles and books when he was an MK so there might be precedent for an MK to publish.
