New Series from Mercaz Zalman Shazar
Mercaz Zalman Shazar has recently begun to publish a series of books on great figures in Jewish history and thought. The first volumes on Rashi, Moses Mendelson and R. Judah the Pious have been published. Apparently there will be a projected 15 volumes in the series. You can read about the volume on Rashi here.

The one on Rashi is disappointing. It is Grossman’s stuff from his Hakmei Ashkenaz but without any footnotes. So they have taken what was an impressive scholarly work and essentially converted it to a popular one. I guess if that is what you want then great, however, I doubt that is the case.

Do you know who the “lucky” 15 are? Saadia? Rambam? Spinoza? Mordechai Kaplan?

No. I couldn’t find any info as to who the others would be on their web site.

Dan, I just saw these books at a friend’s house and Grossman’s book does have footnotes(actually endnotes) while Dan’s does not.
