Stoning God

A quick midrash which I love from this past week’s parashah from Sotah 35a.

ויאמרו כל העדה לרגום אותם באבנים וכתיב (במדבר יד) וכבוד ה’ נראה באהל מועד אמר רבי חייא בר אבא מלמד שנטלו אבנים וזרקום כלפי מעלה

“But the entire community of Israel thought to pelt them with stones” and it is written “Now the Glory of YHWH was seen at the Tent of Appointment” (Numbers 14:10). Rabbi Hiyyah bar Abbah said, “This teaches that they took stones and threw them towards the heavens.”

Talk about anger.

and here based on the title i thought this post was going to be about “Merqulis”

I wrote the post rather quickly, but now I wonder if the worship of “merqulis” might have been in the background. I’ll keep my eyes out if anybody connects between this midrash and this type of worship.

Chazal use this languaget to refer to willful rebellion, f.e. by Amalek that they cut off (bris) milos and threw them klapei maalah.
