The History of Nachmanides’s Commentary on the Torah

Tosafot ramban

The Musaf Shabbat of Makor Rishon has a very interesting book review (Hebrew) of what looks like a fascinating book. Yosef Ofer and Yehonatan Jacobs have published a book that examines the history of Ramban’s commentary on the Torah. Previous scholars had noticed additions to his commentary that Nachmanides added later, specifically those which were added after he emigrated to the Land of Israel. This new book identifies even more additions and addresses the genesis of his commentary in a systematic manner. The review gives an overview of previous scholarship on this issue and what work lies ahead.

Update: In a comment DF reminded me that at the Seforim Blog Eliezer Brodt wrote an extensive post about this book. Read what he wrote there for an in-depth look at the book.

    Where can we buy it?

I would get in touch with Biegeleisen (718) 436-1165 and see if they have it. If they don’t have it, my friend Michael Rose of Judaica Book Centre might be able to send it to you from Israel or get it to you via someone who is in Israel but will be in the US. Send him an email: jbc123-at-bezeqint.net.

    DF:

Seforim blog had a nice article on this (the subject of additions to Ramban’s commentary) not too long ago. I do not recall if the Ofer & Jacobs book you cite here was the subject there.

    DF,

Thanks for reminding me, forgot about it. I’ll link to it.
