The UN’s Latest Piece of Trash

In a series of posts Elder of Ziyon shows why the latest piece of trash from the UN is just that.

Update: NGO Monitor has posted a few more reasons to ignore the substance, but not necessarily the political implications IMHO, of this report.

I do not think that one can dismiss the Goldstone Report that easily. One may disagree with some conclusions but it surely is not “trash”. Judge Richard Goldstone has an excellent reputation. The fact is that this report is consistent with other reporting, including from Israel. For a balanced view one can read the editorial in Haaretz.

I stand by my claim that it is trash. Israel has published a detailed report discussing most if not all of these incidents. The report can be found here and now this website. Goldstone assumes that Israel can’t investigate itself even though there are dozens of investigations going on. The bottom line is that Israel behaves no differently than the US and its allies, whether you want Israel to behave better is a different question, although I think that a good case can be made that Israel is more careful about civilians casualties. Read this by Ari Shavit. Recently American warplanes incinerated dozens of innocent Afghani civilians in a bombing mission against a target which posed no immediate military threat and may never have posed any threat, gas tankers, and no one seems to be calling for any commission of inquiry or bringing American military officers before an international court. The American military has killed thousands of civilians over the past few years and I hardly hear a peep from people who get so upset and distraught when Palestinians are killed. Excesses happened in Gaza and Israel doesn’t deny that, but on a whole most of the operation seems to have been conducted accorded to standards of international law accepted by most armies in the world, just not by the kangaroo court of world opinion and Israel haters (yes I think that many of these people hate Israel).

So let me see the argument is that we did nothing wrong in Gaza; besides other countries do the same or worse, Hammas made us do it, and never forget Israel is always the victim. I can go point by point as to why the argument is weak, but a new year is coming so L’shana Tova.

I never said that Israel did nothing wrong. I emphasized that Israel is investigating a number of incidents and that is what it should be doing. What I do think is wrong is that Israel is held to a higher standard than any other Western country. If you want to know what really gets at me, it is when some American Jews seem to get so upset when Palestinian civilians are killed by Israel, they feel as if they did it themselves. They want to say another al heit or ashamnu, but when their taxpayer money supports an army that kills thousands of civilians in far off lands, they don’t seem to care about it. It is not in their name, as if they aren’t Americans. But when Israel defends itself, gevalt, the pandering begins.

Israel makes mistakes, the army sometimes uses too much force, but I think that Israel’s conduct has no problem standing up to scrutiny and norms of military conduct that are acceptable in military operations by Western democracies. I never said that Israel is always the victim, although it seems that much of world likes Jews as victims more than victors.

    See you next shabbat.
